Important note regarding the full commencement of The Children First Act 2015

Dear Parents/Guardians,

You may be aware that the Children First Act, 2015, was fully enacted on 11th December 2017 by Minister Katherine Zappone.

The Act provides a number of key child protection measures which include:

  • A requirement on organisations providing services to children to keep children safe and to produce a Child Safeguarding Statement, including a child safe guarding risk assessment.
  • A requirement on registered teachers (as mandated persons) to report child protection concerns over a defined threshold to the Child and Family Agency (Tusla).
  • A requirement on all school personnel to report child protection concerns that may not reach the threshold of harm to the Designated Liaison Person (DLP) in the school, who subsequently must seek the advice of Tusla and/or report the concern to the Child and Family Agency (Tusla).
  • A requirement on mandated persons to assist the Child and Family Agency (Tusla) and “to give to the Agency such information and assistance as it may reasonably require” in the assessment of a child protection risk.

Please note that all matters of a child protection or welfare nature are treated in the strictest of confidence.

A copy of our child safe guarding statement and risk assessment are available on our website, as are copies of the Child and Family Agency’s publication “Children First” and the Department of Education and Skills  publication “Child Protection Procedures for Primary and Post Primary Schools 2017.”

Thank you,

K Devine

(Principal and DLP)
