Proposed After School Club

Dear Parents

We followed up our initial survey Re the need for and interest in an After School Club with a note to those who expressed an interest asking for a firm commitment for September 2016 so that staff could be hired and arrangements put in place.  Unfortunately, not enough parents have committed to using the facility and so it will NOT now go ahead. Thank you.

A final note for 2015-16 School Year

Another busy school year has come to an end.  Looking back a lot has been achieved. I would like to thank Ms Doughty and Mrs Smith, with the help of Mrs Lundie, for their work in helping us achieve our Active flag and our 5th green flag for biodiversity and Mrs Hoban for her work in getting us started on the road to becoming a Health Promoting School.  I would like to thank Kathleen for her kindness to the children morning and evening and for being so reliable. I would like to thank Bridget, our secretary,  and Ann our SNA for all their hard work and dedication to the pupils and the school in general over the past year. Also Linda, our cleaner and Mick our caretaker and all our bus drivers.  It is the work of these people that often goes unnoticed as they work away quietly behind the scenes but without them the school could not run as efficiently and effectively as it does so a big thank you to all of them.

A big thank you also to the Parents’ Association who did tremendous work during the year. We look forward to using our new iPads and laptops in the new school year. The many fund raising and social events that they organised were a great success. Thank you to all parents who supported them.

The PA have taken on a project over the summer to build an outdoor classroom to the rear of the school and are looking for volunteers to help them in any way they can. Please contact Jenny McEntee or Valerie Henry through the Parents’ Association facebook page if you can help out in anyway. They are also going to repaint the playground markings over the holidays so, again, if you are willing to help please contact them.

We wish our 6th class well as they prepare for secondary school. We hope they are well prepared for the next step on their journey and that they will look back on their time in Billis NS fondly in the years to come.

A most sincere thank you and Au Revoir to Mrs Edna Smith. Today (Fri 24th) was officially her last day teaching in Billis School as a full-tiSAM_4133me member of staff. We wish her health and happiness in her retirement.  She has promised us that she will be back now and again to help out if we need her (which I am sure we will!) so we are not really saying “Goodbye” just “Slán go fóill”

We welcome our new permanent member of staff, Mrs Adel Henry who will be joining us on 30/08/16. We look forward to working with her over the years ahead and hope that she will be very happy in Billis NS.   She will be teaching 5th & 6th class initially.

Finally, We wish all our pupils, parents, BoM, bus drivers and staff a happy, safe and fruitful summer and look forward to welcoming you and the new Junior Infant pupils and their parents back to Billis NS on 30/08/16.

Healthy Eating Policy Launched!

Our new Healthy Eating Policy was launched on Thursday 16th June.

Dietician, Ms. Lorraine Spotten gave an informative and interactive presentation on preparing healthy food/snacks for lunchboxes. She demonstrated the sugar content of some frequent unhealthy snacks eaten by children as part of their lunch. The importance of water and keeping hydrated was highlighted. Healthy portion sizes were also discussed.

I would like to thank Ms. Spotten for making the evening informative and enjoyable, to Mrs. Edna Smith for preparing a delicious fruit salad for us all to enjoy and of course, a big thank you to all those parents and pupils  that attended the launch.

Thank you to the staff, pupils and parents for helping to achieve this award. A special mention of thanks to Reverend Christiaan Snell and Fiona Hanley who volunteered to help as parent representatives on the Active flag committee. Here are the pupils from the Active flag committee holding our colourful new flag!
